O JAI ALAI :)

Due to the fact that I’m awesome (just kidding DBR), tonight I’m drinking Jai Alai IPA from the famed Cigar City Brewing, also known as the last place in Florida not owned by special interests.

Cigar City might be one of the few not-evil places left, but that apparently doesn’t make them immune — the microbrewery’s Tampa tasting room might be closing for good after a botched city council vote on a routine zoning permit (something rotten in Tampa, methinks).

The good news is, Branch Floridians started a campaign this week to keep the tasting room open, and so as a fellow beer connoisseur and tireless philanthropist, I felt it was my duty to help spread the word far and wide (among my 11 blog readers) about this Florida institution.

(Ha, I said duty.)

Thus, prepare to drool:

Jai Alai IPA:

Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, “the merry game.” Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game.

Pours a rich, coppery brown; nice hoppy orange aroma.

This sexy beast is 7.5% ABV, but you wouldn’t know it from the tangy bite up front; the lush, smooth finish, or the faint flavor of exotic candy it leaves on your lips. Merry game indeed.

I really wish I had another.

I do have one more Cigar City brew in the fridge — a Maduro Brown, and I can’t wait to try it.

UPDATE ON THAT RUNNING THING: Naw. Maybe tomorrow.

  1. Cool. Glad you liked it. I’ll sent you another some time.

I’ve never been to the CC tasting room, but it really is an institution down here and people really do visit Tampa just to go to it. That city council better get their act together!
